Vodafone is set to showcase a range of innovative technologies at Mobile World Congress (MWC25) from 3-5 March 2025. The company will present 30 products and services that integrate advanced connectivity, climate-based data and AI-driven customer experiences. Among the highlights are partnerships with industry leaders such as Microsoft, Aduna and Save the Children, demonstrating Vodafone’s commitment to digital transformation. The event will also feature expert v-talks on future technologies and network solutions.
In a future concept demonstration, Vodafone is piloting drones to restore connectivity when underground cable links are cut or damaged. In a recent test in Seville, Spain, two industrial-grade drones equipped with Taara’s light beam terminals established a temporary wireless connection over three kilometres. One drone was tethered to a mast while the other connected to a data transport hub. This demonstration addresses infrastructure challenges, especially as Europe faces between 75 and 100 cable breaks annually.
Vodafone is also developing a weather sensing network that utilizes microwave links between mobile masts to measure rainfall and its effects. In collaboration with the European Space Agency and UK governmental departments, the network converts signal reduction into accurate weather data. This approach supplements millions of existing IoT environmental sensors, providing vital micro-climate information in both urban and rural areas. The enhanced data supports improved weather forecasting and network performance during heavy rainstorms.
Another notable exhibit is the Ambient IoT device that operates without batteries by collecting energy from its environment. These devices are powered by solar, kinetic, temperature and radio frequency energy, making them ideal for applications such as goods tracking, manufacturing monitoring and enhanced home safety. Vodafone plans to test Ambient IoT technology later this year with commercial availability expected in two to three years as international standards evolve. This initiative reinforces Vodafone’s focus on innovation and sustainable digital solutions for progress.
